Together with our parent company, The Travel Corporation, we want to do what we can to protect and minimize the impact we have on the environment and to be respectful of the cultures where we operate.
To this end, The Travel Corporation has created The Conservation Foundation, which supports a number of different sustainable tourism initiatives, including protecting wildlife, cultural heritage sites, and ecologically sensitive areas around the world; and working to improve the conditions of life in some socially and economically disadvantaged communities through community involvement. Already, The Conservation Foundation has protected 7.4 million acres of Atlantic Forest in Brazil and funded research and restoration in Venice, Italy to help protect the city from degradation.
As one of the Conservation Foundation’s initiatives, Uniworld has now partnered with The Travel Foundation, a United Kingdom-based charity which helps the travel industry take effective action to protect the environment and ensure local people benefit from tourism. With their support, Uniworld will be involved in an exciting, new project—the first of its kind—to minimize the impact of river cruises on the environment. This undertaking will begin in Egypt along the Nile River. The goal is to put in place a “Sustainable Cruising Pack” to minimize water and energy consumption and reduce the generation of waste from the River Tosca, Uniworld’s ship in Egypt. Since the Nile is the gateway to many of Egypt’s great antiquities, we want to do more to conserve this region’s precious natural resources.
Further, we believe conservation starts at the local level, so we have conducted an internal energy audit to reduce our overall carbon footprint and increase the recycling of consumable products. We also work to better inform our guests of the important role they can play in reducing their carbon footprint while on vacation.
At Uniworld, we are committed to continuous improvement across energy and waste management, and to contribute positively to fostering sustainable tourism in different communities. Respecting and protecting the world we live and travel in will create a better world for future generations to enjoy.
